Madrid's Metro system provides a good coverage of the central part of
the city. Metro operates between 6:00 in the morning until 1:30 after
midnight. For most metro lines in that period, you can expect arrival
of a train each five to ten minutes.
Metro and buses lines form an integrated network in the central part
of the city (zone "A", which covers the City of Madrid proper,
including the airport), and both use the same tickets stamped with
"METROBUS". Tickets can be bought at vending machines and counters
at Metro station entries, some news stands, and tobacco shops
(estancos, shops titled "TABACO"). Tickets are stamped
(canceled) upon entry to the Metro system. Keep your ticket with you
in case of a check. A stamped ticked buys you a practically
unrestricted ride within the same zone.
A simple or single-trip ticket (billete sencillo) costs 1 euro,
and a more economical ten-trips ticket (10 viajes) costs 7,40 euros.
A ten-trips ticket would normally cover most of your public
transportation needs for a couple of days. Alternatively, you can buy
one of tourist passes, which are valid for a number of days and
unlimited trips.
- Madrid Municipal Transport Company.
As mentioned above, city buses use the same tickets as Metro, stamped
"METROBUS". City buses are operated by a company named
EMT. Tickets are stamped at each entry into a bus.
Due to the number of bus lines, there is no official map of bus
connections, but information can be found on EMT's web site.
City buses have line numbers ranging between 1 and 310. Note that
buses with line numbers 400 and greater are suburban buses with their
own, different tariffs, and they do not accept the "METROBUS"
tickets. City buses include a number of night buses marked with "N"
and the symbol of an owl, which run approximately
between 23:00 and 6:00 in the morning, when the normal lines are not
operating. On nights before Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays a
night bus service follows the same routes as the Metro lines, from
roughly 01:00 AM to 05:30 AM.
